The Kiwanis Club
of Circleville, Ohio was chartered on May 27, 1929 under the direction
of Tom Renick, a local attorney and E. I. Gephart, the high school principal.
They met at the Boggs Hotel located on part of the present Post Office
property. The Kiwanis Club of Chillicothe was the sponsor club and
the charter was presented on June 8, 1929.
In 1930, an award was given the boy and
girl in the graduating class who showed the most initiative in both extra-curricular
activities and scholarship. This tradition continues to this day
is know as "The Kiwanis Achievement Award".
The club was instrumental in purchasing
a 13 acre tract off of N. Court Street and starting a park. The park
was turned over to the City and is now known as Ted Lewis Park.
In 1962, the Circleville Club sponsored
a new club in Ashville which is still active. It also sponsored a
morning club, the Moundbuilders, in 1975, which, unfortunately, was not
able to sustain it's membership. |
